Bennett meets Bahrain, UAE officials for first time since taking office
PM, who has been in office about 100 days, has already met with the king of Jordan and president of Egypt
For the first time since taking office, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett met with Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani and United Arab Emirates Minister of State Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar in New York on Sunday evening.
Bennett and the other dignitaries are in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
Bennett said the new Israeli government wants to tighten and strengthen relations with the UAE and Bahrain in all fields and added that he hopes that additional countries in the region will join the circle of peace created by the Abraham Accords.
“I am so very happy to meet you. I felt it’s important that we meet to signal the year of the Abraham Accords, which from our perspective is very meaningful,” Bennett said.
Bennett, who has been in office about 100 days, has already met with the king of Jordan and president of Egypt – two long-time allies of the Jewish state before the Abraham Accords one year ago jumpstarted more normalization treaties between Muslim states and Israel.
“We are stable and we believe in this relationship, and we want to expand it as much as possible,” he said.
The prime minister is scheduled to address the General Assembly today and is expected to focus on how Israel is dealing with the COVID pandemic and is facing other threats.
He is not expected to directly address Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas who gave Israel an ultimatum last week during his speech before the General Assembly.
