Even outspoken opponents of Israel in US Congress condemn Hamas attack on Israel
Following the Hamas surprise attack on Israel on Saturday morning, even outspoken critics of Israel have condemned the attack.
The list of those condemning the attack included members of “The Squad” a group of progressive young Democrat congressional members with a history of openly criticizing Israel.
Ilhan Omar, a Democrat representative from Minnesota, who has been a very vocal critic of Israel, released a statement condemning the attacks against Israeli civilians.
“I condemn the horrific acts we are seeing unfold today in Israel against children, women, the elderly and the unarmed people who are being slaughtered and taken hostage by Hamas,” Omar said.
“Such senseless violence will only repeat the back-and-forth cycle we've seen, which we cannot allow to continue. We need to call for de-escalation and a cease-fire. I will keep advocating for peace and justice throughout the Middle East."
She was joined by fellow Democrats Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Jamaal Bowman, also from New York.
While the Democratic politicians condemned the Hamas attack on Israeli civilians, they did not openly express support for Israel’s right to defend itself, instead calling for an end to the “cycle of violence.”
