British Jew, killed while volunteering in Ukraine, had 'lifelong passion' for Israel
A British Jew who served in the Israel Defense Forces was killed while fighting in the Russian-Ukraine conflict.
Jonathan Shenkin, an IDF veteran, died in December while volunteering as a paramedic in Ukraine.
Shenkin, who was 45 years old when he died, was born and raised in Glasgow. He also lived in London and Malta before enlisting in the Israeli army.
Shenkin’s brother, Daniel, who posted a eulogy on Facebook, said that he had a “lifelong passion” for Israel.
According to Daniel, Jonathan died in an “act of bravery” and was awarded a “Valour in Combat” medal.
Shenkin is the eighth British citizen known to have died in Ukraine since the war began in February 2022.
