Gen Z anti-Semitism noted on Twitter
Since Elon Musk has taken over the management of Twitter, there has been a notable uptick in the posting of anti-Semitic content.
A study by the Combat Antisemitism Movement and Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI) disclosed a whopping 136% rise in threats, offensive comments and personal attacks against Jewish people on the social media site.
Some of the activity is believed to have been fueled by remarks made by American rapper Kanye “Ye” West, as well as White Nationalist, Nick Fuentes. Both of them are said to have held off posting their inflammatory rhetoric until Musk was in charge, allowing for more open and free speech and less censorship.
Fuentes, having been previously dropped from the social media platform, had his account reinstated this past January.
Other accounts associated with Neo-Nazi sentiments have also seen a rise in their popularity, particularly among the Gen-Z age group (born between 1997 and 2012). This 11- to 26-year-old age group apparently makes up the majority of the Twitter users.
The NCRI study also looked at how Twitter has been influenced by this anti-Semitic expression and whether or not it could potentially lead to physical attacks upon Jewish people.
