Heavy precipitation leaves a blanket of white on Mount Hermon
Rain is considered a blessing in Israel
Following an exceptionally dry and warm December, a massive rainfall this week triggered flash floods and Israel’s first snow on Mount Hermon.
Two inches of snow accumulated on Mount Hermon on Israel’s northern border. The Mount Hermon ski resort will be open to the public, allowing Israelis to enjoy the snow.
Heavy rains on Sunday and Monday caused the sewage system in some cities to back up and pollute some beaches while sinkholes have already begun to appear in parts of Tel Aviv, causing road closures. Commuters have been urged to exercise caution.
Israel's winter is also its rainy season and lasts from October through April with the bulk of wintry conditions in January and February.
Because it is rare to nonexistent in the summer months, rain is considered a blessing in Israel when it falls in the winter.
“‘If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit. Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want and live in safety in your land.” Leviticus 26:3-5
