IDF intelligence chief warns Nasrallah is 'close to making a mistake' that would trigger a major regional war
Israel’s military intelligence director warned on Monday that Hezbollah chief, Hassan Nasrallah, was “close to making a mistake” that could potentially trigger a major regional war between Iran and its proxies against the Jewish state.
Commander of the IDF’s Military Intelligence Maj.-Gen. Aharon Haliva emphasized that “the chances of an escalation that could deteriorate into war is not low,” during his address at a conference hosted by the Institute for Policy and Strategy of Reichman University in central Israel.
“Nasrallah is close to making a mistake that could plunge the region into a big war. He is close to making this mistake from Lebanon or Syria,” cautioned Haliva.
The IDF intelligence chief referred indirectly to the Second Lebanon War in 2006, which was triggered after the Iranian-backed terror organization Hezbollah attacked an Israeli military post, resulting in the abduction of two Israeli soldiers. The Hezbollah chief later admitted the move was likely a mistake due to Israel’s strong military response.
“All this creates a high potential for an escalation in the region and we need to be prepared that our enemies won’t understand the message we’re sending. Let them not be mistaken, we’re ready to use force and we will do whatever is possible and necessary to bring calm,” Haliva stated.
His warning comes shortly after Hezbollah invited media outlets to watch its soldiers engage in simulated war games in southern Lebanon, a show of force against the Jewish state.
An unnamed Hezbollah official openly threatened Israel during the military exercise.
“Oh Zionists, we are coming for you, from places you know and places you don't,” a Hezbollah member allegedly shouted into a microphone as the terrorists performed simulated attacks on Israel. “We will come at you from the sea, from the air and from the land.”
