Iran arrests employee of London-based news channel, calling her ‘agent’ of Iranian opposition party
The Islamic Republic of Iran identified and arrested an employee of the London-based Iranian opposition news station, Iran International, as she attempted to flee the Islamic Republic.
Iran’s Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib has labeled the channel a “terrorist” organization and accused Elham Afkari of being an “agent” of the opposition. The ministry accused Afkari of “slandering the Islamic Republic, inviting youth to riot and creating terror among the people.”
Afkari is the sister of Navid Afkari, the 27-year-old Greco-Roman wrestler who was executed in September 2020 after being convicted of stabbing a security guard to death during anti-government protests in 2018.
The Afkari family said that Navid was tortured into making a false confession but the Islamic regime has denied the claim. Now, government officials have offered no comment regarding Esmail Afkari’s arrest.
Iran’s ayatollah regime has been occupied with anti-regime protests since the regime’s “morality police” arrested 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman Mahsa Amini on Sept. 16 for Islamic “reeducation,” which resulted in her death. Amini was arrested for failing to wear a hijab, or head covering, according to the Islamic Republic’s code.
The Islamic Republic has been in power in Iran since the 1978-1979 Islamic Revolution.
