Israel can help: Iranian activist Faezeh Alavi advocates for Israel and a free Iran

Faezeh Alavi, an Iranian-born researcher and artist, is challenging the narrative imposed by the Iranian regime by openly advocating for dialogue between Iran and Israel. A devout Muslim who wears a hijab, Alavi is also a vocal critic of the Islamic Republic, believing that reshaping relationships with Israel is key to Iran’s future.
"I really want to see my country free," she explained. "And part of the solution is to reshape the relationships between Iran and Israel."
Having left Iran in pursuit of freedom, Alavi has become an outspoken supporter of Iranian protest movements, particularly those opposing the regime’s oppressive policies, such as the hijab protests. Her artwork reflects Persian history, the struggles of Iranian women, and the potential for a new partnership between Israel and a post-regime Iran.
She also stands in solidarity with Israel, a stance that has sparked controversy among pro-Palestinian activists.
"What people of Iran want is totally different than what the regime in Iran wants," she states, emphasizing that many Iranians see Israel as a potential ally in their fight against the dictatorship.
Alavi has taken visible steps to support Israeli causes, including wearing a yellow ribbon in memory of the victims of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack. "I started to get engaged with some of my Jewish friends," she said. "And I really wanted to show the support for Israel."
On the anniversary of the attack, she displayed the pre-revolution Iranian flag alongside the Israeli flag, symbolizing a past in which Iran and Israel were allies. "We have a great history together," she reflected. "And the only thing that is separating us is the Islamic regime in Iran."
Despite facing opposition, Alavi remains steadfast in her mission to bridge divides and foster dialogue. Through art and advocacy, she envisions a future where Iran and Israel can once again stand together – not as enemies, but as partners.
