Israel security chief Bar urges UN to stop interfering in effort to neutralize Hamas terror threat
The head of Shin Bet, or Israel's Security Agency (ISA), Ronen Bar urged the United Nations to stop interfering in Israel’s ongoing efforts to neutralize the terror organization Hamas as a security threat.
“We are determined to complete our mission in Gaza. All those who aspire to see a safer world should refrain from interfering or stopping us,” Bar wrote in a letter penned last month
Referring to the UN Charter, Bar emphasized that the terror group Hamas had severely undermined the universal principles of human rights and gender equality.
“The UN Charter states that the goal of the organization is to 'renew belief in the most basic human rights, in human dignity and the importance of human life, and the equality of rights between men and women.' Hamas has ruled the Gaza Strip for 17 years and grossly ignores these principles, and the needs of the 2.2 million citizens living in Gaza,” the Shin Bet, chief stated.
"During the activities of Hamas on October 7, there was no respect or rights whatsoever. The UN was founded to ensure that [such things would happen] 'never again' – anywhere in the world. But on the day of the massacre in October, it returned in full force. Jews were brutally murdered, just for being Jews. The IDF is an army that operates in accordance with the highest moral principles. We do not act deliberately against civilians," Bar added.
The security chief stressed that Hamas’ strategic decision to operate from civilian areas forced the Israeli military to enter these areas and neutralize the terror group that has killed Israelis and is responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent Gazans.
“Reality forces us to act in a civilian environment. We are forced to do this by the terrorist organization that acts as a sovereign on the ground and kills civilians, Israelis and Gazans alike from the first day it was founded.”
“Hamas is ISIS,” Bar concluded.
The Shin Bet head also lamented that the UN Sec.-Gen. António Guterres had refrained from meeting him when he arrived in New York a few months ago to discuss security-related issues in the Middle East at the United Nations. Bar eventually met with the UN Deputy Head Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro and urged the UN to put pressure on Hamas and facilitate stabilizing factors in the Middle East.
However, the Israeli security chief noted that the UN had regretfully ignored his request. In his letter, Bar also articulated his frustration with what he perceives as widespread international indifference towards the unprecedented Hamas massacre of over 1,200 Israelis on Oct. 7.
The United Nations has a long history of bias against Israel and has passed more resolutions against it than against all other nations combined, including serial human rights violators like Iran, North Korea, Syria, Libya, Iraq, China and Russia.
Relations between Israel and the UN deteriorated even further in late October when Guterres appeared to justify Hamas for its surprise terror attack on Oct. 7, claiming that it did not happen in a vacuum.
“We must recognize that Hamas attacks did not happen in a vacuum. The Palestinians are under a stifling occupation, their lands are being taken, the economy is paralyzed, and their homes have been destroyed. The chances of a political solution are fading,” Guterres said.
Israeli UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan condemned the remarks and called on the UN chief to resign.
