Israeli foreign minister believes Western nations will quickly reinstate Iran sanctions
Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen told Israel’s i24NEWS he believes the Western world, led by the United States, would impose “snapback” sanctions on the Iranian regime ahead of the 78th United Nations General Assembly in September.
Cohen said the Iranian regime is increasingly perceived as a global threat because of its military cooperation with Russia in Ukraine and reports that it is getting closer to approaching nuclear bomb capability.
“It’s not just the problem of Israel, it’s the problem of the world. It’s the right time to take the relevant steps immediately,” said Cohen.
While the Israeli foreign minister stressed Iran is a global threat, he vowed that Jerusalem would use any means necessary, including military action, to stop Tehran from acquiring a nuclear bomb.
“Israel will use any option, including attacking Iran, to prevent them from having a nuclear weapon. But it’s also important that the U.S. and other countries put their credible military threats on the table. Iran is like a cancer. It is a threat to the stability not just of the region but of the entire world,” he said.
Recalling his recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv, Cohen said Israel would consider providing more assistance to Ukraine. However, he added that any support to Ukraine would need to reflect a balance to protect Jerusalem’s vital security-cooperation ties with Russia in Syria, where the Israeli Air Force regularly conducts strikes against Iranian military targets.
“This is something we will examine in our Security Cabinet, but I don’t think any country is in the position that Israel is in. We support Ukraine’s integrity but we have interests with Russia,” said Cohen.
