Israeli media groups sign letter calling Big Tech 'a threat to free speech, democracy'
In a letter to regulators of Big Tech, various Israeli media organizations condemned Big Tech corporations for their influence over Israeli media.
The letter warned against the “takeover of the Israeli market by foreign tech giants, posing a threat to free speech, democracy, and the survival of Israel’s media industry.”
The media outlets accused Big Tech of unfairly benefiting from Israeli-produced content.
“For the past decade, Israeli content has been appropriated by foreign data and tech giants. These corporations strengthen their dominance at the expense of local creators, operating without responsibility for content or investment in the local industry.”
Highlighting Big Tech companies’ treatment of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, the letter argued that its content moderation policies were biased and treated anti-Israel and pro-Israel content unequally, with pro-Israel content being unfairly censored.
The letter concluded by calling on regulators “to adopt global regulatory frameworks to limit the influence of foreign tech giants and protect local content,” The Jerusalem Post summarized.
The report stated that the letter was “signed by outlets including Maariv, Globes, Israel Hayom, The Jerusalem Post, Walla, and Mako, along with radio stations Radio North, 103FM, 99FM, 100FM Radius, and commercial broadcasters Keshet and Reshet.”
