Ethiopian-Israeli runner wins silver at World Athletics Championship marathon
Ethiopian-born Israeli runner Marhu Teferi, 31, won the silver medal at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary on Sunday morning.
The win represents the highest placement of an Israeli runner at this year's event and secures Teferi’s role as a contender in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Teferi was just 20 seconds behind the gold medal winner, Ugandan Victor Kiplangat, with a time of 2:09:12.
Last year, Teferi won a silver in the European Athletics Championships in Munich, Germany, which saw Israel take two of the top three finishes.
“I am grateful I managed to finish with the silver. I wanted to get the best out of me and this competition was my biggest target. I am glad I managed to fulfill my dream,” Teferi said after the victory.
