Israeli twin brothers develop image enhancement chip in cooperation with Apple
Amiel and Eitan Gorbonos, twin Israeli brothers and students at Technion Israel Institute of Technology, have developed an innovative chip that enhances images by filtering out image noise, resulting in images of significantly higher quality.
The project was conducted in cooperation with the global tech giant Apple at the Technion's Andrew and Erna Viterbi Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering (VLST). The lab engineer Goel Samuel supervised the innovative project.
Like many multinational tech companies, Apple has a strong presence in Israel, attracted by the large pool of local technological talent. Known as the Start-Up Nation, Israel has one of the largest number of startup companies outside Silicon Valley in California.
In recent years, Apple has funded various student projects developed in the VLST lab. The purpose of these initiatives is to offer talented students the opportunity to experience the full technological development cycle – from concept and design to physical chip production.
Dalia Haim, a director at the Silicon Group at Apple Israel, stressed that the long-term goal of these sponsored projects is to nourish and ultimately develop the next generation of chip engineers in the industry. The students also benefit by being exposed to an environment very similar to the 'real world' of the tech outside of the university’s walls.
Located in the northern Israeli coastal city of Haifa, the Technion is widely considered one of the world’s leading centers for technological innovation and research.
In August 2023, the Technion was one of three Israeli academic institutions to be ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide. Often described as Israel's MIT, the Technion secured the 78th position. Additionally, the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot was ranked 67th, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem placed 85th.
Technion's President Prof. Uri Sivan welcomed the prominent global ranking of the three Israeli academic institutions.
“The presence of three Israeli academic institutions within the world's top 100 universities is a testament to the excellence of Israeli academia and science. This achievement fills us with pride,” Sivan assessed.
The American tech giant Intel Corporation is another global company with a prominent presence in the Israeli tech industry. In June 2023, Intel announced that it would invest an additional $15 billion in Israeli-based chip production.
"Our intention to expand our production capacity in Israel stems from our commitment to meeting future production needs and supporting Intel's IDM 2.0 strategy. We appreciate the continued support from the Israeli government," Intel Israel said in its official statement.
