Likud lawmaker submits bill to ease immigrant absorption

Israeli Knesset Member Dan Illouz, from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, submitted a bill to ease the integration of new immigrants by recognizing medical professional licenses based on European Union regulations.

The bill would see Israel adopt an automatic recognition mechanism already being used by 28 EU states.

"Immigrating to the State of Israel is a Zionist value of the highest order, and the State of Israel must ensure a comfortable and gentle reception for every Jew who chooses to immigrate to the land of his ancestors,” Illouz said.

“One of the main barriers to immigration and absorption is the process of recognizing the professional licenses of immigrants and returning residents," he said.

More than 25% of Israel's population are immigrants, according to a recent report by the international Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Illouz, himself, was born to Moroccan Jewish parents in Montreal, Canada and immigrated to Israel in 2009 at the age of 23.
