Newsweek ranks Israel's Sheba Hospital as world’s 9th best among 2,400 medical facilities

The American magazine Newsweek ranked Israel's Sheba Hospital as the 9th best medical facility worldwide in its most recent listing that surveyed 2,400 facilities in more than 30 countries.

Sheba Hospital is located outside of Israel's metropolitan city, Tel Aviv, and received praise for its advanced healthcare facilities and excellent medical services.

Mayo Clinic–Rochester in Minnesota was ranked No. 1, followed by the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and Toronto General–University Health Network in Canada.

Sheba was ranked No. 1 in the Middle East and the fourth-best hospital outside of North America.

Newsweek ranked two other Israeli hospitals among the top 200 hospitals worldwide. Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv was ranked No. 64 and Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva was ranked No. 158.

Three Israeli hospitals appearing on a list of the top 200 hospitals in the world underlines the Jewish state’s prominent position in global healthcare.

Israeli hospitals are typically noted for their advanced technology. In September 2023, Newsweek ranked Sheba Hospital among the world’s top 20 leading “smart hospitals.”

The "smart hospital" ranking focuses on a medical facility's ability to optimize healthcare through technological innovation. Sheba was one of just five non-U.S. hospitals to appear in the top 20.

Sheba Medical Center Director Prof. Yitzhak Kreiss emphasized the hospital’s commitment to medical innovation.

“We are committed to continuing to lead in the development and implementation of medical innovation, in clinical research and in treatment to meet the medical challenges of the coming decade,” Kreiss pledged. “This is how we can provide each and every patient with the most advanced, personal and best treatment,” he added.

Located in Ramat Gan close to Tel Aviv, Sheba Hospital was established in 1948 and was originally used as a military medical facility during Israel's War of Independence. While initially a small facility, Sheba eventually grew to establish itself among the world’s leading medical centers.

Today, the hospital boasts a dedicated team of 1,250 doctors, 2,300 nurses and 15,000 healthcare professionals who collectively manage over one million patients each year.

Sheba's emergency department handles 200,000 visits every year and has played a critical role in treating wounded Israeli soldiers and civilians during the ongoing war between Israel and the terrorist organization Hamas. In addition, the hospital treated former Israeli hostages who were eventually released from captivity in Gaza.

Sheba Hospital cooperates with other leading medical centers in the United States and internationally and officially became part of the Mayo Clinic’s global alliance in May 2023.

Prof. Eyal Zimlichman, the director of Transportation and Innovation at Sheba Medical Center, is enthusiastic about the cooperation, which was forged to improve patient health through effective and innovative treatments. "We are thrilled to be part of this historic alliance to transform the future of healthcare," Zimlichman said at the time.

In March 2022, the Sheba sent a field hospital to Ukraine to help the wartorn nation, in cooperation with the Israeli Foreign Ministry and the Israeli Ministry of Health.
