President Herzog tells US Senator Fetterman: 'You are a beacon of moral clarity as we fight to defend the free world against true evil'
Fetterman (D-PA) has been an outspoken supporter of Israel since Oct. 7 Hamas attack
Israeli President Isaac Herzog met with U.S. Senator John Fetterman on Tuesday during the Congress member’s first-ever visit to Israel.
Herzog, who hosted the U.S. senator from Pennsylvania at his home in Jerusalem, expressed deep gratitude to Fetterman for his solidarity and ongoing support of the nation of Israel.
“Welcome to Israel, my friend. I know that you come out of passion and love for this country," Herzog told Fetterman. "And I want to say thank you, on behalf of our nation and behalf of Israel. Those who stand with us, showing moral clarity, we shall never forget them. And we want to thank you – you’re a true leader.”
Fetterman responded, "I'm honored by those words, but I don't really believe I should be thanked for just doing my job. It's been a very easy and clear choice throughout all of this, through everything your nation has been through after October 7. I've always wanted to be a very consistent voice throughout all this."
The progressive Democratic politician was elected as the junior Pennsylvania senator in November 2022 and has been an outspoken supporter of Israel in Congress ever since.
In March, Fetterman pushed back against Vice President Kamala Harris when she indicated that the U.S. would not rule out “consequences” for Israel if the IDF moved into the southern town of Rafah, in Gaza, without a humanitarian plan in place.
"Israel has the right to prosecute Hamas to surrender or be eliminated," Fetterman wrote on 𝕏.
"Hamas owns every innocent death for their cowardice hiding behind Palestinian lives," the senator added.
Fetterman also criticized several fellow Democrats for voting to oppose a resolution that condemned Iran's missile attack on Israel in April.
"I sincerely thought I'd never witness members of my party refuse to condemn Iran, one of the world's leading terrorism sponsors, after launching hundreds of drones against our special ally Israel," Fetterman said.
During the meeting with Herzog, Fetterman showed him a bracelet that was given to him by the families of loved ones who were murdered by Hamas terrorists on Oct. 7 at the Nova Music Festival.
Fetterman vowed not to remove the bracelet until all of the remaining Israeli hostages were returned home.
“You are a beacon of moral clarity as we fight to defend the free world against true evil,” Herzog wrote of Fetterman on 𝕏 after their meeting.
“I was moved to see you wearing a bracelet from the Nova festival. We deeply appreciate your vocal support for the hostages brutally held by Hamas and your clear demand for their immediate release,” Herzog added.
