Rocket attacks injure several, mar historic signing ceremony
As the signing ceremony between Israel and two Arab nations was taking place in Washington, Palestinians in Gaza fired rockets at Israel, injuring six people and damaging shops in Ashdod.
"And now back to reality," said a Channel 12 reporter as the news station switched from the distinguished speeches at the White House to the frantic scene in Ashdod where police and medical responders were assessing damage.
Several rocket alerts went off as the leaders of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain - on the South Lawn of the White House - spoke about the important and historic nature of their peace agreements with Israel.
"A question to the United States of America, Israel, Bahrain and the UAE: Will the signing of the normalization agreement at the White House now prevent these missiles from leaving Gaza tonight to Israel?" senior Fatah official Monir al-Jaghoub said. "Peace begins in Palestine and war begins in Palestine."
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem also responded to the normalization deal saying they "are not worth the ink with which they were written.
"Our people, with their insistence on the struggle until the full recovery of their rights, will deal with these agreements as if they were non-existent," he said, according to Palestinian media.
At least two people were injured by shrapnel: A 62-year-old man is in moderate condition and a 28-year-old man. Four were treated for anxiety.
