Two Israeli tourists reportedly killed in terror attack in Egypt by policeman
Foreign Ministry is in the process of returning tourist group to Israel
Two Israelis in a tour group were reportedly killed in a terror attack in the Egyptian city of Alexandria on Sunday, the Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed.
Another Israeli citizen was injured and in moderate condition after the incident, while the Egyptian tour guide was killed, the Foreign Ministry added.
The group of Israeli tourists was traveling in a tour bus when a policeman responsible for securing tourist areas opened fire with his personal handgun, Arabic news site al-Arabiya reported.
Ynet news reported that it is unclear if the policeman was the group's security guide.
The attack was carried out while the group visited Pompey's Column, a Roman victory column considered one of the famous tourist sites in Alexandria, the second largest city in Egypt.
“The Foreign Ministry and the Israeli Embassy in Cairo are working with the Egyptian authorities, together with the National Security Council, the Prime Minister's Office and the IDF, in order to return the Israeli citizens to Israel as soon as possible,” read the statement.
The terror attack comes one day after the Hamas terror organization launched a large-scale surprise attack against Israel from Gaza.
Israeli authorities cautioned all Israelis who are outside of the country not to call attention to their national identity and warned of possible terror attacks.
