U.S. ‘strongly urges’ Israeli leaders to reach compromise
Following the announcement of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s firing of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Sunday evening, White House Spokesperson Adrienne Watson made a statement on behalf of the U.S. Biden administration.
"We continue to strongly urge Israeli leaders to find a compromise as soon as possible. We believe that is the best path forward for Israel and all of its citizens," Watson said.
"Democratic societies are strengthened by checks and balances, and fundamental changes to a democratic system should be pursued with the broadest possible base of popular support," she added.
Israel experienced additional protests and national uproar after Gallant's termination was announced.
Despite a call by Israeli President Isaac Herzog earlier this morning to halt the judicial reform legislation, as well as calls from some coalition members to pause in order to reach a compromise, the coalition continues to push ahead with the legislation.
