UK Labour Party becoming more pro-Israel?
Over the last few years, England’s Labour Party has had to confront anti-Semitism within its ranks, most notably under former party leader Jeremy Corbyn.
But, during a five-day visit to Israel by a contingent of Labour Party members, the British parliamentarians reaffirmed their support for the Jewish nation.
“The Labour Party has returned to its traditional position of being a very good friend and supporter of the State of Israel,” said Labour MP Steve McCabe, who is also the chairman of Labour Friends of Israel.
In October 2020, the Labour Party suspended Corbyn from the party following allegations of anti-Semitism when he refused to retract a statement that the claim of anti-Semitism in the Labour Party had been blown out of proportion by his opponents.
Corbyn’s refusal to walk back his comments repelled British voters and caused Labour to lose four consecutive elections. Because of this, McCabe entered a pivotal role in the Friends of Israel group in an effort to mitigate the damage allegedly caused by Corbyn.
Since then, McCabe said Jewish constituents have slowly begun to return to the party, having seen positive changes take place.
The Labour Party’s delegation to Israel aimed to serve this purpose, with many of the MPs having never made the trip before. The British parliamentarians met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Israeli Labor Party head Merav Michaeli, as well as high-tech managers.
They also paid a visit to the Gaza border, as well as other sites of interest.
