Not since the Nazis

The recent ghastly discovery of 100,000 bodies, found in a mass grave in Syria, is a blood-curdling and chilling reminder of the type of demonic acts which haven’t been seen since the Nazi era, when a temporary insanity took hold of mankind, causing it to regress to its lowest depths.

Sadly, it isn’t until a despot is forced to leave his tyrannical stronghold, that the world is finally able to see the horrors of how far he was willing to go in order to shut down his opposition – encompassing acts which rival the evilest of all men who ever walked this earth.

Bashar Assad, Syria’s exiled leader, now has that distinction, a man who, instead of providing a country which would recognize and embrace the wide tapestry of cultures and religions, represented in his land, chose to follow in the ways of his cruel and ruthless father, Hafez who was said to have brutally slaughtered and oppressed his people, almost as sport.

As tortured dissidents began to emerge from Sednaya, the human slaughterhouse, as it is called, they were described as those who, “shuffled out of the Syrian prison’s gray concrete corridors like zombies, rising from a graveyard as some sobbed when reunited with long-unseen relatives.”

It was the public’s first view at evil on steroids, the type of vile wickedness which, in recent days, has been reserved for Israel, blamed for genocide, the deliberate starving of its enemies and any other malicious criminal intent that could be foisted upon the Jewish state, categorized as true monsters. But ever since real malevolence has been unearthed in Syria, the voices of those same moral authorities and virtuosos of the ethics of humanity have become muted in silence, devoid of all commentary.

Apparently, their shock and appall is exclusively preserved for Israel and the Jewish people, who, to them, win the prize for being the worst examples of depravity which the world has ever known.  But let’s take a moment to stare into the face of genuinely profound evil, where chemical attacks choked and suffocated its victims.

According to an article written in The Bulwark, “Bashar Assad was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians and the immiseration of millions more, using the state to torture, kill, and maim innocent civilians for decades.”

Special PBS correspondent laments at what she personally witnessed, saying, “I will never unsee what I saw today. The decaying, emaciated bodies of young men covered in the brutal scars of torture and starvation, their faces drawn in a rictus of pain. Sobbing mothers, searching through rows of destroyed boys for their babies.”

Yes, not since the Nazis has this kind of immense horror been brought to light, but we hear nothing from Israel’s accusers. South Africa, the International Court of Justice, Human Rights advocate, Karim Khan, the U.N. Security Council, the BDS crowd, Students for Peace and Justice in Palestine, Faculty for Justice in Palestine, supermodels Gigi and Bella Hadid, Congresswomen Ilhan Omar and Rashid Tlaib – not one of them has issued a statement roundly condemning the torture and barbaric treatment suffered by Muslims at the hands of Bashar Assad.

Could it be that the news hasn’t reached their ears? Or is their selective rage solely limited to the Jewish people and the nation which was established to be their homeland?

The list of human rights abuses, perpetrated upon Syrians, by the two Assad regimes are legendary and can no longer be swept under the carpet. Much to their regret, too many victims, who had the great misfortune to endure the worst torment and affliction still remain as living witnesses to the inconceivable oppression which constituted a political genocide of those who refused to pay homage to the father/son duo.

The blood of the vast numbers of Syrians, who have been massacred since 2011, cries out from the earth, in the vain hope that their immeasurable suffering will not have been completely forgotten, but that, at least, an acknowledgement of these monstrous acts, against the Syrian people, will be amplified in a way that history records, as the true crimes against humanity.

The decision to preserve these killing fields for posterity is both just, as well as a good way to force those who point the finger at Israel, for having had the gall to defend herself, to squarely look evil in the eye, without backing down from what has been detailed and documented as the great human tragedy of our time.

The fact that anyone who dared to express antipathy for this despicable regime, was taken away, never to be seen or heard from again, testifies to the worst abuse that a leader can allow his people to suffer, all for the sake of retaining unchecked power.

But almost as bad is the blatant hypocrisy of the anti-Israel and anti-Jewish crowd, who would have everyone believe that their voices are a vital call to right the injustices of Muslims who are supposedly being ethnically cleansed by their Israeli neighbors when, in fact, it’s being perpetrated by their own kind – in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria.

Because when it comes to the retention of power and influence, not to mention the acquisition of vast sums of money, protesters who stand in the way, regardless of religion or culture, are the collateral damage to enjoying life at the top, with all the benefits and reverence that accompanies the title of Honorable Dictator.

If each of us were honest, we would have to admit that the world is a better place today than it was before December 8th, the day that Bashar Assad fled the country that he turned into a hell on earth, for so many of his countrymen who have now been released from the worst conditions, which none of us can even pretend to imagine.

In fact, all of these disclosures may be the reason for the rumors swirling around that Asma Al-Assad, wife of Bashar, is seeking a divorce from her husband. Although it seems impossible that she hadn’t been aware of the transgressions being committed by her husband, on a daily basis, now, she can no longer claim ignorance or lack of knowledge since all of these atrocities are dominating the news cycle.

Yes, there are those who take pleasure out of painting Israel as the real monster in the Middle East landscape, but here’s the proof that they’re wrong. If they ask the Israeli people what they think of their government, they might not receive a flattering response, but Israelis are still allowed to express what they feel and live to see another day!
