In this interview with Christian journalist Paul Calvert, Elana Heideman, executive director of the Israel Forever Foundation, discusses the significance of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, and its relevance in both historical and modern contexts.

Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the Jewish calendar and initiates a period of reflection, repentance, and prayer, culminating in Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

Heideman explains the symbolic traditions associated with the holiday, such as eating apples and honey for a sweet new year and engaging in rituals like Tashlich, where Jews symbolically cast away sins into a body of water.

This year’s High Holidays carry an unprecedented emotional weight for the Jewish community worldwide, as they coincide with the one-year anniversary of the tragic events of Oct. 7, when a horrific massacre shook Israel to its core.

Heideman elaborates on Israel’s challenges, including ongoing missile attacks and concerns about the 101 remaining hostages, adding that this year’s celebrations are marked by a mixture of apprehension and resilience.

She emphasizes the strength of Jewish faith and the continued fight for Israel’s security, stating, “We live between blessing and curse all the time... but we're going to keep hoping.”

As the world watches Israel’s military efforts to defend itself, Heideman’s prayers for the new year are for increased unity and the recognition of miracles amid adversity.
